my amazing friend from high school started up a new etsy company, called ear ink, temporary ear tattoos which is perfect for the lil’ one’s, especially if you don’t want to get their ears pierced. so of course i’m going to have the lil’ one showcase her robot ear inks because she is obviously a model (oh dear!).

you can also tell she’s a child of a photographer. she takes my picture and then checks the back to make sure it’s okay :)

and if you’re looking for some ear inks for your lil’ one, you should check her site out, she has some amazing designs and they’re pretty awesome :)
playing with chalk and flowers in the backyard on this beautiful may day.
i met the dad my freshman year of college as we lived on the same floor at ucsc. i met the mom about a year later when they started dating. this was over fifteen years ago. so i may or may not have cried a bit when i first met their son. i don’t photograph newborns often but when i do, it’s these kinds of photos that makes me fall in love with photography all over again.
he’s here, he’s here! i can’t even begin to express how happy, amazing, incredible and in love this new family is over their little man’s arrival. he is an absolute dream to spend time with and to photograph. when it comes to capturing newborns, this is what i truly love… the natural moments with mom, dad and everything in between.

an evening in my parents backyard. the lil’ one loves her adventurous playground.

she always gets super excited about the kumquats and runs straight for them.

what i find funny about her and kumquats?
if you’ve ever had one, you know how it has a sweet skin yet sour inside?

well you would think that she would make this face over eating a kumquat, not dripping some on her arm. geez.
anyway…back to more adventures. she has a mini-shovel that she loves…
and playing with the dirt…
and hunting for ladybugs.
she really loves the backyard and i don’t blame her, i remember it being a lot of fun growing up too.

and it’s now a photography playground for me too.

from my parents backyard.
the last time we were in front of the camera with a photographer was our wedding (and yes, our wedding photographer was the amazing joy because of course :) i always thought that during the pregnancy or newborn stage of our lives, we would have our photos done. but time just escaped us and i didn’t know anyone in the bay area that i entrusted to photograph our family.
when i met tenley through mom’s group, we not only had our amazing lil’ ones in common but we also had a strong love for photography. our lil’ ones became awesome play buddies while she and i became friends and photo play buddies (sounds funny but it’s nice to go on photo play dates). i also knew that she was the perfect person to photograph our family and capture us.
both of us has been wanting to do a baking session with our clients but no one really seems to want to do one so we both jumped on the chance to do a baking portion which came out beautifully! i also knew that we had to photograph at the barn because it is such a favorite spot for not only our family but for future photo sessions (also the location for this year’s san jose mom and me mini sessions). plus we got to use props that i use for sessions which was awesome because i secretly love my props and was happy to actually use them for us.
i joked that i wouldn’t be a passenger photographer during the session and what was crazy that not once did i even think about the photography side. i let go and enjoyed being present, to spend time with my family and for some moments, forgetting that we were being photographed which is one of the best signs (i.m.o) of a truly wonderful photographer.
i am absolutely smitten and in love with every image and had a hard time even picking out some favorites for this post. i do know that i will be making an album of these images because they need to be printed, hung and showcased. and after this family session, i don’t want to wait another two years to capture our family, i need to remember that we need to have more photos of us a family.

p.s. i also always thought that i had mommy glasses when photographing the lil’ one. but nope, she is just a real photo ham who photographs really well, ha! :)
a few of my favorite images from the session yesterday on the hill…

…sigh, so much love! i would love to have one like the first image of our family as something blown up in our home.
testing the light (same time tomorrow) for tomorrow’s family session at the location in front of our home. i really hope that it’s not cloudy.

seriously, the front of our home is this location! i told the husband that sometimes i feel that us finding this home is a dream and we’re going to have the bank show up one day saying that we need to return it.
the curious george experience wasn’t very wonderful for the lil’ one (at least she didn’t cry). she had a lot more fun exploring the fields of the library instead.

this is a nice and calm week before the real craziness begins. i leave for l.a. next week and will be working out of there for a week. two family sessions and mom & me mini-sessions (although who knows what else might come up while i’m down there). we then get to take a nice (and much needed) vacation for a seven day cruise through mexico with my parents. we return to my in-laws visiting, the lil’ one’s second birthday celebration which means my family will be coming up to visit too. a mini breath that will last about one day and then will be working every weekend until june. crazy but awesome crazy.
so throwing this out before i space again and forget to advertise but for the l.a. and bay area moms that i follow this here lil’ tumblr, i do have a few slots open for l.a., oakland and san jose if any mom (or dad as a gift) is interested in a mini-session. all the information can be found here :)
